The meeting, which brought together important stakeholders of trade between China and Chile, helped recognize the progress made in exports of several Chilean products to China.
During this important visit by Ni Yuefeng, Minister of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, public and private sector representatives met to strengthen bilateral relations. Significant agreements were reached during the visit. These included renewing requirements for shipping fresh fruit in cold storage, opening up the market for shelled hazelnuts and national poultry products, together with lifting the avian influenza alert applied to Chilean turkey products for the past two years.
The agreements were signed during a ceremony held in the O’Higgins room of La Moneda Palace, attended by the delegation of Chinese authorities that accompanied the Chinese Minister of Customs and the Chinese ambassador to Chile, among others. The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, accompanied by the Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, Alfonso Vargas, the Director of the Chilean Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG), Horacio Bórquez, the Director of the Office of Agricultural Policies and Studies (Odepa), María Emilia Undurraga; the Executive Secretary of the Chilean Agency for Food Safety (Achipia), Nuri Gras, and representatives of trade associations such as the President of ExpoCarnes, Juan Carlos Domínguez, the President of the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile AG (ASOEX), Ronald Bown, and from Fedefruta, Jorge Valenzuela.
Juan Carlos Domínguez, President of ExpoCarnes, stressed the importance of these visits for international trade:
“The fact that the Minister of Customs received us a month ago during Chileweek and then came to visit our country, changes a lot the things, since it allows a personal treatment and closer relations. In addition, they provide opportunities to discuss pending issues and help them begin to materialize”.
ExpoCarnes organized an enjoyable lunch at Viña Casa Silva, where guests could enjoy different pork dishes and fruit. The Chinese Minister of Customs welcomed the opportunity to learn more about our country, while Minister Antonio Walker and Juan Carlos Dominguez, President of the association, stressed the importance of China for Chilean trade, as well as being able to rely on the authorization of entry of Chilean products to that market, which are produced under the highest quality standards. “We are interested in complying with all the rules to deliver a good, safe and sustainable product, of excellent quality,” Domínguez stressed.
In addition, the Minister of Customs toured orchards and cherry packing plants of the Agricultural Society Lo Garcés in San Francisco de Mostazal, and the white meat processing plant that Agrosuper has in Rosario, accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture of Chile, Antonio Walker and trade association representatives.
